Dental implants are generally given 3-4 months to integrate (fuse) to the jawbone before anything is attached to them. However, in some cases, early loading (attachment) at 1-11 weeks or immediate loading (at the time of implant placement) is possible, especially directly after tooth extraction.

In order to connect the implant with a restoration (crown, bridge, partial or denture) an abutment, (coupler) is secured inside the implant and the restoration is secured over the abutment(s).

How often do you schedule a dental examination to have your teeth checked and cleaned?

During a dental examination, here is what to expect:

• Initial consultation – your dentist and dental team members are trained professionals who will work together to review your oral health and identify any dental or health needs; review your medical and dental histories and discuss any previous or current oral health concerns
• X-rays – a series of partial- or full-mouth X-rays may be taken to identify cavities or other dental problems not apparent during a visual review
• Teeth cleaning and polishing – the dentist or hygienist will remove any plaque on or between your teeth and then apply a tooth polish; proper brushing and flossing techniques may be reviewed
• Examination – your dentist will review the X-rays and conduct a visual evaluation of your teeth and gums and look for any symptoms of oral cancer or other health concerns, such as diabetes, stroke, respiratory conditions or rheumatoid arthritis
• Treatment plan – once the examination is complete, your dentist will review your oral health and options for any treatment or follow-up care; additional appointments may be set up as well as a date for your next six-month checkup and cleaning to help you maintain good oral health
