Periodontitis is a serious problem that can wreak havoc in your mouth. Preventing it can save you a lot of pain and hassle, not to mention the time spent in the dentist's chair. If you learn the signs and symptoms of periodontitis, you can stop gum disease from the start.

What is periodontitis? Periodontitis is a gum infection. The infection destroys the soft tissue of the gum and can even affect the bone. Once these structures are damaged, the tooth has little support, and can fall out. Knowing the signs of periodontitis can help you and your dentist identify and fix the problem before you begin to lose your teeth. Some of the symptoms of periodontitis are

  1. receding gums
  2. swollen, red, or purple, painful gums
  3. a change in the way your teeth fit together
  4. loose teeth
  5. pus around your teeth
  6. bad breath, and a bad taste in your mouth

Why does periodontitis cause bad breath?

The foul odor in the mouth which periodontitis patients experience is caused by the infection in their gums, which also causes a bad taste which will not go away despite brushing and using mouthwash. It is important to see your dentist right away if you begin to experience these types of symptoms.

Oral infections can become dangerous if left untreated. Consequences of periodontitis Like an infection in any other part of your body, the pus and bacteria cause the tissue to swell, causing inflammation, pain and irritation. As periodontitis progresses, you may notice that your teeth are shifting. You may have spaces between your teeth that weren't there before. Since this infection damages the support structures that keep your teeth in place, you might notice that your teeth are moving around in your mouth. Eventually, periodontitis will cause bone damage and tooth loss.

At Tebo Dental Group, we can prevent and treat periodontitis. Our staff of general and pediatric dentists is dedicated to your good oral health. For an appointment, call us at (678) 894-7091.

Parents know that their children need to visit the pediatrician regularly, but, did you know that infants need regular and early visits to the pediatric dentist as well? Here are some guidelines on when parents should take their children to see the dentist.

  • Start Early A child should have his or her first dental visit by his or her first birthday. Your child may not have very many teeth, but it is still important to let a pediatric dentist examine the teeth that have erupted, as well as letting your child get used to the whole dental experience.
  • Teething When your baby cuts his or her first tooth, you should make an appointment with the dentist. The early appointments are just as important for the parents as for the kids. Your infant's dentist will help you identify potential problems with your child's teeth, including feeding problems, bottle and pacifier use, and cavities.
  • Get Recommendations If you don't have a pediatric dentist, you should ask your child's pediatrician for recommendations. Ask your friends and family members who they use and whether their kids like their dentist. It is important to find a dentist's office where both you and your child feel comfortable and like the people that work there.

Good oral health starts early, and to protect your baby's smile, you should seek the advice of a dental expert before problems start. More and more kids have problems with their teeth, due to diet and other issues, and keeping your child's teeth healthy is a top priority. Find a pediatric dentist you trust, and make sure that by the time you celebrate the milestone of your little one's first year, you've made a visit to the dentist.

At the Tebo Dental Group, we offer pediatric dentistry as well as general and cosmetic dentistry. Your teeth are our priority! Call us at 678-894-7091 to schedule your appointment today.
